I started by quoting:

“We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones.

Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place, but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly, those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton.

We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here.

We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred?”

― Richard Dawkins, Unweaving the Rainbow

Your life is at stake. Don’t let procrastination blow it.

A wise man once told me, “You don’t know what business you are in until you get into the business. Just start.” It has been the best piece of business advice I ever had. ‘Just starting’ doesn’t mean you have to give up your day job. Starting doesn’t mean you have to give up the rest of your life, or the people and things you love. It doesn’t mean you have to focus only on the startup. Life is not an either or scenario. The opposite is true.

Success with balance comes after you just start.

You don’t have to figure out the how or the why of any of it. Just ask yourself these three questions:

What do I want to have?  Who do I want to be?  How do I want to feel?

Answer them, then, jump.

You’ll realize that instead of falling it feels like flying, as shown by Robin Williams in the Peter Pan clip below. Your frown of worry becomes a grin of delight. Then yell at the top of your lungs into the breeze.

I have built and exited a few companies since 2003. And also I have written movies, two New York Times best selling books, landscaped five acres of Pacific North West woodland, moved house six times, rescued a few neglected animals, drunk my own body weight in fine wines, learned to shamanic dance, traveled the globe, laughed and loved with two amazing partners.

It is not luck.

It is about understanding that balance creates success and success creates balance.

Just jump.

My best critics:

“Trevor is much too self-assured.” – Headmaster Williams in an end of year school report on Trevor Blake, aged 7

“I am all in favor of ambition, but in this case a little realization of social standing and opportunities for such lofty aspirations is in order.” – Ma Brown in a career evaluation report on Trevor Blake, aged 16, shortly before he applied and was accepted to Royal Navy Officer college

“He is a jerk without any of the skills required to be a successful CEO.” – Prior boss in a reference email to potential investors in QOL Medical, they invested anyway.

“It is the dumbest business model I ever saw. An employee-less pharmaceutical company? Please!” – Fortress Hedge Fund in response to a Trevor Blake business plan presentation

“My advice? Sell as soon as possible and get out while you still can. FDA will dismiss it at first sight.”
– Pharma advisory service hired to assess potential of cancer compound at Trevor’s cancer R&D company about 3 months before FDA IND approval

There are always more critics. Who knows what they’ll say when, Trevor Blake, a boy from Liverpool starts another new company in another new industry for which he had no experience, no skills, and no idea where to begin.

All that matters is that he started and had the tools and confidence to figure it out from there. All that matters, is that he started.

Now it’s your turn.

Jump.

Then fly.

Thank you for taking part. This is the end of the course and also, just the beginning of an amazing adventure and life for you.
